G3 Day 2- Caswell Bay

Second day with my Canon Powershot G3. Not happy with using program mode on the previous day, because it gave too little control, I switched to using aperture and shutter priority modes, although I still didn't bother with manual focus (which was a mistake). Again I was late going out, and again the clouds arrived as I got there, but they made for interesting photo opportunities. All the images on this page have undergone post-processing, but in most cases very little, and some not at all. I'm finding that digital images require far less in the way of colour correction than film. All that's usually needed is a little boost in contrast, probably because I'm used to using slide film which is more contrasty than digital, and a bit of unsharp masking.

Sky Reflection
For some reason Caswell Bay always holds a lot of water in the sand during the winter, which makes it a great spot for sky reflections. No adjustments made to this shot.
Rock and cloud
A telephoto shot of the same scene. The 140mm equivalent lens is very useful for such shots. No adjustments, this is exactly how it came out of the camera.
Cave
A small cave on the west side of the bay. The dark stuff on the rocks is not oil, but a black lichen.

Scattered Rocks
Seaweed covered rocks in a small stream on the west side. Here's an 1152x864 wallpaper version.

Orange Rock
A few close-ups of rocks on the beach, taken in soft light.
Green Rock
Pink Rock
Seaweed Rock
Caswell Bay
Looking back across the bay.
Sunlight Reflection
Sunlight reflecting off the gentle waves.
Dark Clouds
Dark, foreboding clouds with a silver lining.
Into the Light
A direct shot into the bright sun, an excuse to use the inbuilt 3 stop neutral density filter. I used spot metering off the sun for the exposure, which was 1/1600 at f8.0, almost as dark as the camera can go (1/2000).
Limestone Cliff
Warm sunlight and dark shadow. Good contrast range, hardly any adjustment.
Caswell Bay Shops
The tourist face of Caswell Bay, thankfully closed during the winter. Nice warm light, hardly any adjustment.
Winter Canoeists
The world is full of crazy people. Here are two of them.
Man and Dog
This was an experiment with a fast film speed. 1/640 at f3.0 at ISO 400. Notice the "digital grain". This is a 1.4:1 crop from the original.
Setting Sun
Last rays of golden sun over the sea.
Canoeist Sunset
A wide angle shot (35mm equivalent) showing the sun's rays radiating from the clouds, and a last twinkle from the sun itself.
Red-tinged Clouds
Like the dying embers of a fire, the orange clouds darken and fade.
Swansea Bay Twilight
A quickly grabbed shot on the way home, showing the twilight wedge and an almost full moon above a murky, moody South Wales.
